In the New Testament, Jesus, stated: “When you pray…. When you give…. When you fast.” There was an assumption made that we would be fasting. I don’t know about you, but this has never been a constant practice of mine throughout the journey of my faith. How about you?
This year seems to be a year that God is calling me into more and more consistent spiritual discipline! It has been a great journey because as God has placed it on my heart He has also given me abundant Grace to figure it all out. You know the “How do I do this?,” “When do I do this?,” “Why do I do this?” It is almost like I am living in a beautiful prelude of music before the real story begins. There is something about my life that, right now, seems urgent for me to shore up on prayer, studying His Word, fasting. And with all these ‘consistent’ disciplines it means a need to slow my life down. It takes time to devote to these spiritual excercises. Just like working out my physical body – I gotta put time in at the gym! And that means that other things in my life have to go. The joy is that I don’t feel like it is some huge sacrifice but rather a ‘rightness’ about the choices and maybe the ‘rightness’ is what will lead to ‘righteousness.’
I just finished a book called “Fasting” by Jentezen Franklin. It was an easy read and very good at bringing together the scriptures on fasting, both Old and New Testament. And interesting enough, I have been talking about fasting with others. There seems to be more and more of a need to come back to this basic and under-utilized discipline in my life. How about you? Anyone have an experience with fasting to share with me? I would love to hear of how God has moved in your life?
